If you put a "-size 1000x1000" in there, it will run A LOT faster and you don't need to modify the existing files. Also, play with the -geometry feature to set the size of the images you want on the canvas.
I've also written a little script to create contactsheets with ImageMagick, but more traditional sized contact sheets.
